The Shopping Ban

Shopping bans have been kind of a trendy things amoungst bloggers over the last few years. Everyone seems to embark on them for different reasons. Some want to curb their addiction, some want to get out of debt, others just want to see if they can do it.

My approach is a little bit different. I don't feel like I'm a shopping addict. I actually kind of hate the mall, I don't have any debt, and I usually spend a very small amount (less than $50) on thrifted and clearanced clothes each month. Shopping isn't usually an emotional thing for me. Rather, it's something I do to pass the time. Jeremy and I both enjoy wandering through stores, just seeing what's there. We're both big fans of thrifting. A relaxing day for us is to get a fancy coffee and hit up a few thrift stores. Spending money is generally not a problem for us, especially since we don't make much and living within our means is a priority.

So why a shopping ban?

My goal for the next 30 days is to cultivate a heart of gratefulness. I have more than enough clothes. I really like what I have, and whenever I go through my closet I have a hard time finding things to get rid of, partly because I go through my closet regularly, partly because I have gotten good at only buying things I love. So I want to do this shopping fast to step back. To be thankful for what's in my closet already. To challenge myself to remix more. And just to be grateful that I have clothes on my back.

I want to kickstart summer with reading, taking walks, gardening, spending time with family, and just enjoying life. Shopping can wait.

The Rules:

  1. No personal shopping for clothes, accessories, shoes, etc.
  2. If something wears out, I'm allowed to replace it (although this is highly unlikely since I've recently bought a few replacements).
  3. I am still allowed to thrift for home decor, supplies for crafts, etc. Just no clothes. Pretty sure my husband would cry if we gave up thrifting entirely. :-)
  4. I'm still accepting items from sponsors for review.

The ban officially ends on June 13. I'm starting small with 30 days, and we'll re-evaluate after that.

Have you ever done a self imposed shopping ban?
