Homemade Flour Tortillas

Happy Monday to you! While I sort though photos our of weekend, I'd like to share with you my new favorite thing to make at home: tortillas.  They are super easy to make, and you probably have all the ingredients in your pantry right now.  The end result is way cheaper and tastes a million times better than store bought.

First off, mix all your dry ingredients together.  You'll need 2 cups flour, 1/2 teaspoon salt,  and 1 teaspoon baking powder.

Once they're mixed, add 1 tablespoon coconut oil.  The original recipe calls for lard, but I think any oil would work just fine!  Mix until it starts to look crumbly.

Lastly, add 3/4 cup water.  You should have something that looks like this:

Form the dough into a ball and knead on a floured surface a few minutes.

Separate the dough into smaller balls.  I split mine up into 8.  Do 5 or 6 if you want nice, big tortillas.

Take each ball and roll it out nice and thin.  They do puff up a bit when cooking so I tried to get mine as thin as I could.

Then, place your rolled out dough on a hot skillet.  No oil needed, just heat!

After a few minutes, your dough will start to bubble, like so.  Now is the time to take a pair of tongs and flip it.

Let it cook for a few more minutes on the other side.  Keep warm and repeat with the rest of your dough.

And there you have it! You have your very own homemade tortillas!  Either serve immediately (best) or keep in the fridge for later use.  I used these ones to make some super tasty egg and avocado quesadillas.

Enjoy!

Homemade Flour Tortillas
Makes 8-10 taco-sized tortillas

2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp baking powder
1 tbsp coconut oil
3/4 cups water

  1. Whisk the flour, salt, and baking powder together in a mixing bowl. Mix in the coconut oil until the flour becomes crumbly. Add the water and mix until the dough comes together; place on a lightly floured surface and knead a few minutes until smooth and elastic. Divide the dough into 8-10 equal pieces and roll each piece into a ball.
  2. Preheat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Use a well-floured rolling pin to roll a dough ball into a thin, round tortilla. Place into the hot skillet, and cook until bubbly and golden; flip and continue cooking until golden on the other side. Continue rolling and cooking the remaining dough.
