This post has been floating around in my head for a bit. It's time to put words to these thoughts. This is maybe a bit too wordy, but bear with me.
Up until about a year ago, when I really started reading style blogs, I thought all people who wrote them were narcissistic, obsessive, weirdos who just couldn't seem to get enough of themselves. I've since learned that this is not true, but I realize that some people still hold these sentiments. I can't speak for all style bloggers, but I'm here to tell you a little about my reasoning for starting a style blog.
1) Confession: I don't always feel very good about my body. I don't always feel very good in my clothes. Style blogging helps me to see that I really don't look all that bad. Taking daily outfit photos helps me to learn about what looks good on my body and consequently feel better about myself. While I appreciate readership, I don't do this for anyone but myself (sorry ;-)). So even if nobody ever read my posts, I would still write them.
2) Looking halfway put together is important to me. I work from home, and some weeks, 5 out of 7 days I don't go anywhere. At all. My husband and maybe a few neighbors are the only people who see me and what I'm wearing. And sometimes, that makes it really hard to change out of my PJs. I get into a "who cares" attitude, and I don't get dressed, and I feel bad because I didn't get dressed, and I feel bad about myself, and then I'm not productive. So...you can see how it's better when I put some effort into what I wear each day. This blog is part of that. It keeps me accountable. It helps motivate me to get dressed each day.
3) I'm trying to figure out how to dress beyond the basic jeans and a tee. That is what I wore pretty much everyday for the first 20 years of my life. I want to change that. I grew up in a home where I didn't have much. I had plenty, but there was no extra money to spend on clothes. 90% of what I wore was hand-me-downs. While I'm certainly not living the life of the rich and famous now, I'm trying to be more conscious of what I do spend on clothes, and to buy things I actually like. Not just wear what I do because that's what I've worn my whole life. I'm learning I like to wear dresses, and that it's OK to wear one just because.
4) I like being able to look back at my pictures and see what worked and what didn't. It helps me learn. My style has already grown in a few short months of doing this.
5) It's fun. Do I really need any other reason? :)
Whew! If you read all that, I thank you. :) I'm sure I'm missing some, and my reasons will change as time goes on, but for now, this is where I'm at.
So what do you think? If you blog, why do you do it?
