The Story of Us: Part 2

For part 1, click here.

A few messages flew back and forth that first night.  And a few more that first week.  And so began a correspondence that would last the next 8 months.

By the end of August 2009 the relationship started to turn from "casual pen pal" to "maybe something more serious."  We continued to write, I gave him my phone number, and we skyped occasionally.  Jeremy was set to deploy in October, so it felt like this was 'do or die' time.  I honestly thought that he'd deploy and I'd never hear from him again.  So I was very surprised to find out that he had contacted my dad to find out if he could meet me during his leave from Iraq around Christmas.

And so our relationship continued.  I was finishing up my associate's degree that fall, and was set to move home and attend the local community college to pursue further education when I was finished.  We skyped just about every spare moment we had.  We knew each other's schedules, and planned to talk accordingly.  He called me every chance he got.  Things were great.  I was happy, and everyone that saw me told me they'd never seen me smile so much.

Below the surface, I was a bundle of nerves.  Excited to finally meet him, but scared to death.  What if this was all a joke?  What if I'm holding on to nothing?

December came along.  And a few days after Christmas, we finally met.

Stay tuned for part 3.... :)
