I hate diabetes, but it has brought me some awesome, amazing opportunities.

For 8 years, I both attended and counseled diabetes camp.  The summer after I was diagnosed, a brand new camp was started in my area, so I got the be there through it all.  I met some amazing kids, and was more encouraged by them than they ever were by me.  I felt so much joy helping kids manage their diabetes for a week...some of them giving themselves their own shots for the first time, or inserting their pump set without mom or dad around.  I am so blessed to be a part of these milestones in their diabetes management.  Going to camp every year was a challenge, but also the most refreshing week I had out of every summer.

For many years, I also worked very closely with my CDE.  Not just to manage my own diabetes, but to get the word out about her support groups, help her organize, and attend every one I could.  I met type 1s and 2s of all ages, pump reps, and CDEs.  All had something to say, and all made me feel a little less alone.

The people I’ve met are the “awesome” in my diabetes.  They are how I realized that I wanted to go to nursing school.  They are the ones that help keep me going when I feel like I can’t.  They are the examples I can look to when I feel like pregnancy, old age, and other life milestones are out of reach.

God gives me the strength to get through it, and the people He bring my way make it awesome. :)
